Birdwatchers Flock to Tofino Shorebird Festival

Running from May 6th through the 8th, the Tofino shorebird festival is the perfect chance to get a glimpse of these beautiful creatures. Birdwatchers will be in heaven, as they'll be able to spot rare species such as whimbrels, western sandpipers, dunlin, and even the threatened red knot. Last year, travelers were able to see more than 30 different species over the course of the weekend.
Yet the festival is more than just a loose connection of birdwatchers hoping to see their feathered friends. There are also plenty of activities for the whole family. An art show will be running all weekend, where the work of some local photographers and artists will be available for purchase. Several kids' activities are on the schedule, and various organizations in Tofino are running guided tours of popular birdwatching areas.
There will also be a presentation by local luminary Mike Yip, who is considered to be an expert on the birds of Tofino and Vancouver Island. This prolific author has written three books solely dedicated to the birds of the region and also runs a website.
