Last chance for "Bard on the Beach"

Vancouver has plenty to offer those on British Columbia holidays, but the summer is a special time in the city, as it's the time that "Bard on the Beach" takes place.

The summer-long event, which is held from June 3rd to September 25th, offers Shakespeare in a nontraditional setting - in tents by the beach. The event has proven popular with locals and travelers, drawing over 100,000 people every year, according to the Vancouver Sun.

The coming weeks are the last chance to see the shows, with classics like Much Ado About Nothing and Henry V slated for the final weeks. But even if travelers miss out this year, they'll be able to catch the festivities next summer - in a slightly bigger venue, if organizers have their way.

According to the news source, the group behind the festival has petitioned the city to help fund upgrades to the the main tents, which are more than two decades old.

"The whole thrust is trying to make Bard more available to more people," event director Christopher Gaze told The Vancouver Sun. "We've been playing to capacity audiences for about the last five or six years. We have reached the moment where we must change to address the fact that more people want to come, and we must get them in."

If plans are approved, the event will be able to sell more tickets and hold more Bard fans next year, in addition to offering patrons the chance to enjoy picnics inside the tents.
