Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrive in MontrealMeet a friendly driver at Montreal’s airport today as your Canadian travel adventure begins. Once checked into your hotel, join Montrealers on the terraces of St. Denis street to sample the spirit of the city through the enticing array of menus, or stroll Mount Royal and listen to local musicians work their craft. The mix of cultures, cuisines, languages and trends is yours to savor.
Day 2 – French Canada’s Hub – Tour MontrealThe lively residential and financial districts of Montreal are exciting to explore and give you a sense of life in modern Montreal. With a guide to personalize your journey, you could visit the gorgeous Notre Dame Basilica, which gives a sense of life from 17th Century Canada. The view from the top of Mount Royal may be of a typical Canadian skyline but this disguises the European feel of this buzzing city. Montreal is a city that packages historic stone architecture and skyscrapers – a modern city with old world charm.
Day 3 – From Metropolis to History – Montreal to Quebec City on VIA Rail’s Corridor Travel through some of French Canada’s most picturesque countryside as your Canadian vacation heads toward Quebec City. Step off the train and into a little bit of Europe – right here in Canada! Meet a guide at the train station, who will take you on a city orientation tour before dropping you off at your hotel.
Day 4 - Journey into the heart of Charlevoix
A gourmet experience awaits on your Canadian vacation as you travel by rail along the stunning Charlevoix coastline. Dine on mouthwatering food as you experience an onboard multi-media presentation. Rolling mountains and little artisan towns line the mighty St. Lawrence River, as Beluga whales breach in the distance. Arrive in charming La Malbaie and enjoy a few hours to stroll the cliff top overlooking the river, visit the folk art history museum, or simply admire the old stone estates of centuries past. The ride back to Quebec City this evening provides another opportunity to feast on a delicious 3 course meal. Overnight in Quebec City. (note - you can also ask your Fresh Tracks Canada consultant to add an overnight stay in Charlevoix).
Day 5 - In Quebec City – Experience French Canadian Culture
A full day in Quebec city gives you a chance to discover the historic city walls, cobble stone streets, and century old buildings that give Quebec City its old world air. There is nowhere else like this in North America. A fine foods excursion by rickshaw takes you to the Old city’s best eateries for a chance to explore the culture of the city through your stomach!
After a full day in Quebec City, you board VIA Rail’s Ocean Train and settle into your cozy private cabin. You’re rocked to sleep as you leave French Canada behind and travel to Halifax.
Day 6 – Enter the Maritimes – Arrive in HalifaxWake to views of the Atlantic Ocean, rolling hills, and quaint coastal villages that appear frozen in time.
An onboard guide makes the most of your morning – recounting the history of the Maritimes and describing the region’s unique traditions. Traveling in Easterly class is one of the best sightseeing tours you’ve ever been on (note – only available in peak season).
Sit in the panoramic dome car and count the colorful sails out on the water before stepping off the train into the upbeat, Celtic atmosphere of the largest city in the Canadian Maritimes.
Day 7 – The Coastal Spirit – Tour Nova Scotia Nova Scotia has a rich Celtic heritage and sea faring history, not to mention rugged coastlines with fishing villages perched on the Atlantic Ocean. Depending on which day of the week your tour falls on, experience one of four guided tours to discover Halifax, Peggy’s Cove, the South Shore including Lunenburg, or the reversing tides of the Bay of Fundy.
This is the last night of your Canadian train vacation – the perfect excuse to treat yourself to fresh seafood – the ultimate regional specialty.
Day 8 – With Fond Memories Made – Depart HalifaxMuch too soon, you bid farewell to the Canadian east and the scent of salt water in the air as your Canada travel experience ends, with departure from the Halifax airport.
