Day 1 – Pan Canadian Train journey begins – Arrive in Vancouver
One of the most beautiful cities in the world, Vancouver is surrounded by mountains and ocean. Upon arrival you will be met at the airport by a friendly driver and travel to your hotel in ease. Spend the rest of the day relaxing, dine al fresco, take a trip out to Stanley Park, or try one of the many tours on foot or bicycle. Overnight in Vancouver.
Day 2 – Discover Vancouver
Today you have the choice to enjoy a small group sightseeing tour of Vancouver’s main highlights, or alternatively, take in a grand cycling tour of Vancouver and Stanley Park.
Enjoy the remainder of your day at your leisure. Stroll the beaches of English Bay, whilst admiring misty gulf islands and snowcapped mountains in the distance, or discover a secret garden in Chinatown. Overnight in Vancouver.
Day 3 – Board VIA Rail’s Canadian Train – Vancouver to Jasper
Spend the day in Vancouver at your leisure before boarding the train to Jasper for the first portion of your Pan Canadian rail journey. Board VIA Rail’s “Canadian” train in the evening, and settle into your cozy private cabin for your overnight journey. You will be lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking of the train.
Day 4 – Arrival in Jasper
When you wake up, snowcapped mountain peaks roll by right outside your window. As the train weaves through the rocky peaks watch for bears, deer, elk or moose - you never know when you might spot one. Arrive in the tiny and welcoming town of Jasper, filled with adorable cafes and gift shops run by smiling locals who will be happy to tell you about life in the mountains. Get an ice cream cone and walk around in the fresh alpine air, then retire to your Jasper hotel.
Day 5 – Maligne Lake Tour and Cruise
This morning the natural beauty of the Rockies is right outside your window as you take a guided tour through one of Jasper National Park’s most spectacular areas. Marvel at the Maligne River as it thunders through the canyon in a series of waterfalls. Learn how Medicine Lake is “mysteriously” disappearing before boarding a narrated cruise on Maligne Lake, bound for serene Spirit Island.
Day 6 – Board VIA Rail’s Canadian Train – Journey east to Winnipeg
This afternoon you are transferred to the train station. A cozy cabin with a large picture window awaits you on VIA Rail’s Canadian Train. Your Pan Canadian train vacation continues as you leave the Rockies and slowly glide into the Canadian prairies. Overnight on board the train in a private cabin.
Day 7 – Arrival in Winnipeg
The scenery changes as you travel across the undulating plain of the Prairie Provinces. Settle into your seat and enjoy watching the sights from your window seat. Arriving in Winnipeg, you will have the rest of the day to explore this diverse multicultural city. Known as the “Cultural Cradle of Canada,” Winnipeg is home to Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and so much more.
Day 8 – Experience unique culture in Winnipeg
Enjoy exploring The Forks — Winnipeg’s gathering place with nine acres of activity, restaurants, shopping and interactive fun. Then visit the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, a sight to see from both the outside and the inside. Complete your day with a fun and mysterious “hermetic code” tour of the Manitoba Legislative building, with one of Winnipeg’s most treasured tour guides.
Day 9 – Explore Winnipeg and re-board VIA Rail’s Canadian Train
Continue to explore the city of Winnipeg on an escorted bus tour of the city highlights. Or you can choose to visit Assiniboine Park Zoo and discover the ultimate Canadian experience with the “Journey to Churchill”. For those who want to get active, take a bike ride through scenic Assiniboine Park, see a herd of bison at Fort Whtye Alive and practice your bird calls at Oak Hammock Marsh. This evening settle back into your comfortable cabin as the Pan Canadian train takes you east once again.
Day 10 – Onboard VIA Rail’s Canadian Train – Journey east to Toronto
Pass through southern Ontario through the great lakes region. While onboard, enjoy fine meals featuring regional specialties and Canadian cuisine. Overnight on board the train in a private cabin.
Day 11 – Arrival in Toronto and city exploration
Arrive in Toronto this morning and spend a day enjoying the quaint and colorful neighborhoods for which Toronto is famous. A city tour ensures you won’t miss any of the main city attractions. Overnight in Toronto.
Day 12 – Witness the power of Niagara Falls
First thing this morning, join a guide to see one of the great natural wonders of the world - Niagara Falls. The Hornblower Voyage to the Falls takes you close enough to the falls to feel the spray on your face, the thundering sound gets louder and louder and you’re thankful for your poncho. Nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake is a charming Canadian town, and the perfect place to unwind on your vacation. Overnight in Toronto.
Day 13 – Onboard VIA Rail’s Corridor Train – Toronto to Ottawa
In the afternoon your train journey along the shores of Lake Ontario will begin. Relax in the comfortable VIA rail train as you travel through thick forests, across rushing rivers, past grain towers and old barns. There is no better place to get the feel of Canadian culture than the historic capital city, Ottawa. Take a stroll around the parliament buildings overlooking the Ottawa River before settling in for a comfortable sleep in your Ottawa hotel.
Day 14 – Explore Ottawa
The federal capital of Canada has plenty to discover. Check out the priceless masterpieces at the National Art Gallery and the fascinating historical displays at the Museum of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum. Choose between a hop on, hop off tour of Ottawa or a historical walking tour to make the most of your time and discover what the city has to offer.
Day 15 – Onboard VIA Rail’s Corridor Train – Ottawa to Montreal
The Corridor train carries you into the next province of Canada – Quebec! Train travel is the most scenic route you can take in Canada. Enjoy the views of the open farmland of rural Quebec and the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Overnight in Montreal.
Day 16 – Discover Montreal
Today you may choose to travel through the depths of Montreal’s history on a guided bus tour. Step back in time at the gorgeous Notre Dame Basilica, explore the old Bonsecours Market, and savor the anecdotes of your guide as you gaze across the city from Mont Royal Park.
For those feeling a bit more active, choose the Old Montreal walking tour. Accompanied by a dynamic professional guide, this walking tour includes abundant information about the history, architecture and secrets of Old Montreal. Overnight in Montreal.
Day 17 – VIA Rail’s Corridor Train – Montreal to Quebec City
Travel a short distance by train through Quebec’s picturesque countryside as your coast to coast Canadian train vacation heads towards Quebec City. Step into Quebec City’s colorful history as you visit authentic French Canadian Quebecois shops, and discover the pride that the residents feel for their city. Overnight in Quebec City.
Day 18 – Quebec City Tour
Spend the day discovering Quebec City’s French Canadian culture. You can choose to discover the Old City from a comfortable seat by bus, or stretch your legs on a privately guided walking tour. Marvel at the beautiful architecture of the fortified city, visit historic sites commemorating the battles between French and English, and admire the beautiful scenery of the St. Lawrence River.
Day 19 - Quebec Countryside tour
Today you travel back in time to rural Quebec as you ride along the Chemin du Roy to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. You will visit the world famous Shrine in Sainte-Anne de- Beaupré, stop at the Montmorency Falls and be treated to a short visit on the Island of Orléans, discovered by Jacques Cartier in 1535. Overnight in Quebec City.
Day 20 – Across Canada train journey ends
Much too soon your pan Canadian train vacation comes to an end as you leave the fresh air and colorful sights of Canada behind.
