Itinerary

Please note, like most of our Canada rail packages & tours, this railway vacation can be customized to your needs just ask one of our local experts when you call.

Day 1 – Arrive in Vancouver – Your Journey Begins
Arrive in the coastal city of Vancouver and take a breath of fresh mountain and ocean air as you are taken from the airport to the train station. Board VIA Rail’s “Canadian Train” in the evening, and settle into your cozy private cabin for your overnight journey.

Day 2 – VIA Rail Canadian Rockies Train to Jasper
You will be lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking of the train. When you wake up, be mesmerized by the snowcapped mountain peaks right outside your window. As the train weaves through the rocky peaks watch for bears, deer, elk or moose - you never know when you might spot one.

Arrive in the welcoming town of Jasper, filled with adorable cafes and gift shops run by smiling locals who will be happy to tell you about life in the mountains.

Day 3 – In the Canadian Rockies – Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise
The Icefields Parkway is known as one of the most scenic alpine roads in the world. It takes you along the rugged spine of the majestic Rocky Mountains, past huge glaciers and snowcapped ridges.

You have
2 options from which to choose today to enjoy this area to its fullest.

• Option 1: Small Group Sightseeing Tour
Stop at the Athabasca Glacier and walk on this incredible sheet of ice while listening to your tour guide explain how it was formed millions of years ago. Stand in awe as you marvel at the scenery on the Glacier Skywalk.
Activity rating: Easy

• Option 2: Private Icefields Tour with Helicopter Experience
Spend the day with a private driver-guide, to explore the Icefields at your own pace. Then, step away from the crowds and take a helicopter tour abundant in natural beauty, glaciers and waterfalls. Leave from an exclusive Icefields base and soar over Cline Pass and over Cline, Lion and Lioness Glaciers. You’ll also view a spectacular 900ft waterfall flowing from two aqua green lakes!
Activity rating: Easy

Upon arrival in the Lake Louise area, you can either choose to stay at the iconic Chateau Lake Louise, or at the intimate Moraine Lake Lodge.

Feature Dinner
After a day of touring, enjoy a prearranged dinner at Lake Louise or Moraine Lake! Relax and unwind with 5 star cuisine and attentive service. Take a moment to soak in the incredible lake views.

Day 4 – Exploring the Canadian Rockies – Lake Louise to Banff
Take your time to enjoy the beauty of Lake Louise while you eat breakfast, then take an interpretive tour through the stunning Rocky Mountains to Banff. This lively and welcoming mountain town is known for its quirky shops, charming art galleries, award-winning restaurants and beautiful natural surroundings. Go shopping on Banff Avenue or enjoy an outdoor adventure such as canoeing or hiking.

Insider tip: Ask us about our Lake Louise activity menu to make the most of your morning in this iconic place!

Day 5 – Explore Banff
There’s nothing more invigorating than breathing in the fresh mountain air on a bright and clear Rocky Mountain morning.

You have
3 options to choose from today to make the most of your time in this mountain town:

Activity rating: Easy

• Option 2: Sunrise Photography Tour
Wake up early to experience the magical wilderness of Banff National Park at sunrise. Explore with a private guide and learn how to take great photos. Ideal for the amateur photographer wanting to increase their skills with a manual camera. This is a sure way to make friends and family at home jealous!
Activity rating: Moderate

• Option 3:
Banff Heli-Hike and Picnic
Soar above majestic peaks and get away from the crowds of Banff on a guided heli-hike and picnic. Marvel at pristine and breathtaking vistas that will leave you speechless.
Activity rating: Moderate

Insider tip:
We’ve included admission to the Banff Gondola today. We recommend an evening gondola ride, once the crowds have dispersed for the day. Climb to the peak of Sulphur Mountain on a scenic gondola ride and gaze at a panoramic vista of the incredible mountain valley and the town of Banff below.

Day 6 – On the Rocky Mountaineer Train – Banff to Kamloops
Leave Banff in the early morning while you enjoy a delicious gourmet breakfast on the luxurious Rocky Mountaineer train. Sit back in your comfortable seat and admire the passing scenery. To get a better look, visit the outdoor viewing platform. Savour the scent of pine and spruce forests and feel the crisp alpine breezes in your hair. Spend the night in the welcoming city of Kamloops.

Day 7 – Rocky Mountaineer Train – Kamloops to Vancouver
As the train makes its way across the interior of British Columbia you will see the landscape start to shift and change. See the powerful cascade of Hell’s Gate, a huge waterfall in Fraser Canyon. Arrive in Vancouver in the late afternoon and spend the rest of the day sightseeing and exploring this funky and creative city. Stay overnight in Vancouver.

Day 8 – Your Canadian Train Vacation Ends – Depart from Vancouver
Say goodbye to the fresh air, mountain views and colorful vibe of Vancouver as you catch your flight home today. You will have plenty of stories to tell when you return about your experiences in the beautiful Canadian Rockies.

Common Questions

Will it be cold when I visit Canada in summer?

The temperature varies from mild to hot, depending on location. Northern Canada will range between 50°F to 64°F (10°C – 18°C) in summer. The interior of BC, prairies, Ontario and Quebec can reach temperatures around 95°F (35°C). Canada's west coast, mountain regions, and Maritimes enjoy milder summer temperatures. They range on average from 59°F to 77°F (15°C – 25°C).

What are the best ways to travel around Canada on my vacation?

Canada has a network of spectacular roadways, train routes, ferry crossings, and float planes. We can arrange for you to travel by car or to sit back and relax.

Is it safe to drive in the mountains?

New visitors will drive with ease because of the wide and well maintained roadways. We'll ensure your trip includes the most spectacular and safest routes throughout your trip.

When is the best time to see wildlife?

That depends on the destination and type. As a rule, the main feeding and migration seasons are best for wildlife experiences. Tell us which animals interest you and we'll make your trip coincide with the best viewing season.

Are your tours escorted?

No, but you'll feel like it is with all your connections and experiences prearranged. Our clients love the freedom and flexibility it gives them. Some of our wildlife experiences are small group tours led by specialist guides.

We arrived home on Sunday Morning after an amazing month in Canada. We met some lovely people and had lots of treasured experiences. Our time on the Fresh Tracks tour was great and we thank you for this. Our train transfer was... read more on time and friendly. Jasper was quite different from what I expected being such a small town, and so much drier than Vancouver and Whistler. The hotel was lovely and we slept well there. At the Skywalk I saw a mountain goat and as this was the only mountain goat we saw I was quite pleased. Our bus driver took all those not staying near Lake Louise to the lake then dropped the others off and came back to pick us up. We really appreciated this as otherwise we would not have got to see the Lake. The transfer to Banff was wonderful, along the journey we were so lucky to see so much of the wildlife, we saw a couple of black bears and mountain sheep near the road. We enjoyed all our tours in Banff especially the helicopter over the three sisters. We really appreciated our room at the hotel, I could wake up to that amazing view every morning and I would be happy. An absolute highlight was The Rocky Mountaineer journey back to Vancouver. Such perfect and superb service.  I have nothing but praise for SilverLeaf Service and the hosts in our carriage. The first part of our holiday we spent part in Vancouver and in Whistler and the end of our journey on Vancouver Island.  Each and every part of our holiday was special. Thank you so much.
