Day 1 – Begin your Canadian Rockies Train Vacation in Vancouver
One of the most beautiful cities in the world, Vancouver is surrounded by towering mountains and sparkling ocean. From the very beginning, we take care to ensure your vacation is off to the best start! Walk out of the airport and right into your own personal private vehicle. Your driver will help orient you to our hometown, Vancouver!
Feature Dinner in Vancouver
Did you know Vancouver is one of the top culinary destinations in the world? Enjoy a great meal in the best setting while making memories with your loved ones – in one of our favorite restaurants!
Overnight in Vancouver.
Day 2 – Vancouver to Whistler on the Rocky Mountaineer Train
Step aboard the Rocky Mountaineer train for the start of a three-day train journey to the Canadian Rockies. Today you’ll travel from ‘sea to sky’ on a half-day train journey from Vancouver to the Olympic village of Whistler. Along the way, the train winds along the shores of Howe Sound, a deep fjord surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Then slowly it glides into the mountains, besides the rushing waters of the Cheakamus River, with waterfalls cascading down from the glaciers above. Upon arrival in Whistler, enjoy a relaxing afternoon and overnight stay amid the beauty of BC’s Coastal Mountains.
Included in your stay is a Peak to Peak Gondola pass, to whisk you up to the alpine. Stroll meadows full of wildflowers and admire vast mountain valleys as far as the eye can see.
Overnight in Whistler.
Day 3 – Onboard the Rocky Mountaineer Train – Whistler to Quesnel
The Rocky Mountaineer’s whistle sounds and the smell of a delicious breakfast wafts from the galley as you pull out of Whistler heading north. Over coffee you may chat with your fellow passengers or simply gaze out of the window at some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.
In a single day, you will travel through the majestic Fraser Canyon, by the winding shores of Anderson and Seton Lakes, and into the ‘cowboy country’ of the high-desert Cariboo Plateau. In the canyon, you may wonder – not for the last time – at the feat of engineering this railroad represents. As you gaze down from your window, thousands of feet to the rushing waters of the Fraser River below, spare a thought for the chutzpah of the 19th century railroad barons who conceived the project – and the skill and hard work of the engineers, surveyors and migrant workers who built it. This evening, your train arrives in the small town of Quesnel where you are free to enjoy a dinner on your own and a night in a standard hotel.
Overnight in Quesnel.
Day 4 – Quesnel to Jasper on the Train
After a restful sleep in your Quesnel hotel, you will board the train again and prepare for the day you have been waiting for – gazing up at the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Canadian Rockies.
Keep looking out the window – you have a chance of spotting wildlife such as bald eagles, moose, bears and deer. When you reach the Rockies and you see those jagged peaks for yourself, you will be blown away by their beauty. Arrive in the tranquil mountain town of Jasper and breathe the fresh pine-scented air.
Overnight in Jasper.
Day 5 – Canadian Train Journey East – Board the Canadian Train
Today a transfer will take you to the train station. Once onboard the Canadian Train, settle into your cabin that awaits you before heading to the dome car or lounge to meet fellow travelers. Say goodbye to the Rockies and glide across the Canadian prairies.
Insider tip: The Canadian Sleeper train offers many styles of onboard accommodations. Speak to your Vacation Advisor to find out if a Cabin for 1 or 2 is better for your journey or consider upgrading to Prestige Class for an unforgettable all-inclusive service.
Overnight onboard the train in a private cabin.
Day 6 and 7 – Canadian Train Journey East Continues
As you leave the mountains, the scenery begins to flatten out as you enter the vast plains of the prairies. Fields of golden canola stretch all the way to the horizon and the big skies are a panoramic theatre for the rolling white clouds. The prairie landscapes are beautifully empty, punctuated with the odd red barn, oil rig or grain silo. Gaze out at the part of Canada that author W.O. Mitchell described as “the least common denominator of nature, the skeleton requirements simply, of land and sky.”
Overnight onboard the train in a private cabin.
Day 8 – Arrive in Toronto
As the Canadian Train travels across Canada, it speeds up and slows down with the rhythm of the little towns it visits and the freight trains it passes. This afternoon your train pulls into the heart of Toronto. Spend an evening enjoying the quaint and colorful neighborhoods, wonderful ethnic restaurants and bars, museums, Broadway shows, concerts and galleries of Toronto.
Overnight in Toronto.
Day 9 – Depart Toronto
Before you know it, your train journey has come to close and it is time to make your way home. A private vehicle and driver will transfer you from the hotel to the Toronto International airport.

When not on the train, you'll be staying at various local three to five start hotels or lodges along your route, some of which are very iconic properties with great locations, views and history. All our accommodations are carefully selected by our Canadian Insiders. We'll make sure that wherever you stay, you get the best value and comfort based on the seasonal availability.
What is included in the price?
Typically we include and pre-book all your main trip components so you don't have to worry about your connections, places to stay, or activities on your trip. You'll receive a complete travel package with detailed documentation and our Canadian Insiders remain at your disposal before and during your trip to answer your questions.
Can I customize this trip?
Your trip can be as rich as you'd like, and completely arranged around your interests and needs. The greatest benefit of working with us is our local knowledge. You can request your free trip plan to decide what you'd like to see and do.
If your trip is a special occasion, we'll make sure it is unforgettable. Or if you're traveling with a group, we'll take care of the logistics so you can share time together stress-free.
What is the train experience like?
Because most Canadians typically do not use the train for commuting (as in the US or Europe), the two main rail providers here are driven by tourism. You'll experience the romance of true trans-continental rail travel, with a wide selection of services, accommodation types, and great food.
Featured train experiences:
- Rocky Mountaineer operates daylight touring trains, which travel along three of the most spectacular routes in Western Canada. You'll enjoy onboard commentary, award winning service, and incredible food.
- VIA Rail is Canada's national train provider, with routes running Coast to Coast and through remote parts of northern Canada. The type of train depends on your journey, and can vary from the classic trans-continental sleeper trains to daylight trains with overnight stops.
- Sleeper Trains feature a once in a lifetime adventure of sleeping on the train in comfortable cabins. You can relax in your private onboard accommodations, or enjoy local wines and chef-prepared meals in the dining car during this unforgettable trip.
When is the best time to see wildlife?
That depends on the destination and type. As a rule, the main feeding and migration seasons are best for wildlife experiences. Tell us which animals interest you and we'll make your trip coincide with the best viewing season.
Is this an escorted tour?
With the exception of our guided wildlife trips, our vacations are not typically 'escorted.' We combine the best of both worlds – the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities, plus the freedom of 'independent' travel. You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary. This allows us to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, and timeframe.
Will it be cold when I visit Canada in summer?
The temperature varies from mild to hot, depending on location. Northern Canada will range between 50°F to 64°F (10°C – 18°C) in summer. The interior of BC, prairies, Ontario and Quebec can reach temperatures around 95°F (35°C). Canada's west coast, mountain regions, and Maritimes enjoy milder summer temperatures. They range on average from 59°F to 77°F (15°C – 25°C).
How much does my trip cost?
All our trips can be customized to fit your schedule and budget. The price depends on travel season, train service, hotel level, and the sightseeing tours you choose. Request your free trip plan which will provide you with a detailed cost estimate.
